MGIST Program Reflection
During my time at NCSU in the MGIST Program I have learned everything that I know about GIS and web mapping applications. My current profession of law enforcement does not use GIS on a regular basis; therefore, I began this program two years ago (2013) with an open mind and a thirst for expanding my GIS knowledge in an effort to introduce advanced GIS techniques to law enforcement agencies.
Throughout this program I have experienced many successes and failures as I have approached obtaining my MGIST degree with a “learn as I go” mentality on a “trial and error” basis. The biggest challenge has been that most students enter the program with some GIS experience, knowledge and/or background; I entered the program knowing that I would have to play catch up and put forth extra effort to succeed. I have learned that my strengths include mapping applications and excelling at ArcGIS Desktop application building and processing whereas my weaknesses remain with developing code, scripting and API applications. The MGIST Program at NCSU has made my graduate experience worthwhile providing me with the opportunity to learn from professors, teachers, research associates and assistants that are patient and willing to work with students outside of their careers and/or irregular schedules. The MGIST professional staff have made it easy to excel in my graduate studies and reach my academic goals within the program. I have accomplished various goals in the program including personal academic goals, GIS learning objectives and applying my course work to the law enforcement field. The curriculum within the MGIST Program is conveniently laid out for students to follow the courses easily as the majority of the courses build off of each other and create immediate connections through GIS academic concepts.
The MGIST Program at NCSU has enabled me to grow as a student and professional. I have been introduced to an array of new opportunities. Through my Capstone Project I was able to work with the NC National Guard and create a web mapping application that assists in identifying probable marijuana site locations in NC. This application has opened many doors for me and helped my agency to view GIS in a more abstract and assisting light. Personally, I have started to apply what I have learned from the MGIST Program in my day to day accomplishments and professional projects in a statewide effort to assist local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
In the future, I hope to continue to apply what I have learned from the program and to further my GIS knowledge and education whether it be creating products and web applications more frequently in my profession or taking more classes to expand my GIS and coding/programming skills.
